HOPE - THE NEX
Established in 2001, HOPE Cape Town is a registered non-profit organization based in Cape Town that aims to raise the quality of life of people and communities. Emphasis is placed on children, adolescents and their families in situations of poverty, HIV/AIDS and related illnesses.
HOPE Cape Town’s proposal was to establish a multipurpose facility (The Nex), which would provide—together with government departments, civil society partners and a variety of organizations—the Delft community with a home from home where children are nurtured, an educational hub where teaching and learning take place, and a safe space where people can access services and assistance, where their needs are met without travelling far distances.
We worked closely with the architects, CCNIA, to determine the configuration of the buildings and how they would relate to one another on site. This collaborative process ensured that the landscape developed with as much priority as the internal space. The result is a series of outdoor ‘rooms’ through which there is ease of movement alongside held spaces of lingering and gathering.
To determine a resilient plant palette well suited to the sandy Cape Flats environment, we drew on the plant knowledge developed and successfully tested in the Mitchells Plain Hospital project. The garden has quickly flourished, making for a generously green site in an otherwise harsh and dry landscape.
